Scuba diving enthusiasts from around the world, flock to Australia's Great Barrier Reef each year to dive and snorkel on the amazing coral formations for which the reef is famous. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef system anywhere in the world and stretches right along the coast of Queensland. Its southern most point is at Lady Elliot Island and in the north, it stretches right through into the Torres Straight between Australia and Papua New Guinea.

The reef itself is one of the most diverse ecosystems in existance with hundreds of species of coral, mollusks, crustacians and fishes. All of these elements combine to produce a diving destination that is second to none. There are several coastal centers along the Queensland coast from which access to diving on the Great Barrier Reef can be made. In the south, Lady Elliot Island is available by air from Hervey Bay or Bundaberg. The resort on the island has a dive shop and a dive eduction program. Great Barrier Reef day tours operate by launch from Bundaberg and the Town of 1770 to Lady Musgrave Island and lagoon. This is one of the most beutiful reefs in the entire system. A little further north is Heron Island which has a research station, diving resort and full scuba diving holiday packages.

Tours to the outer reef operate from all of the Whitsunday Islands and you can share a great dive experience any day of the week by travelling out to one of the permanent diving pontoons that have been established on the outer Great Barrier Reef itself. Cairns and Port Douglas are two of the best places to stay if you want to do day trips to the reef. Dozens of different operators run cruises fom both of these locations. Cairns also has a number of dive schools where you can become accredited. This northern region is also the best place to join an extended diving expedition if you want to vist the reefs more remote regions. Extended diving trips to the outer reefs in the Coral Sea or to famous dive spots like the Ribbon Reefs and the Cod Hole near Lizard island are also on the agenda.

If you are a scuba diving enthusiast, you must have a diving holiday on the Great Barrier reef.
