Great Barrier Reef Islands»» Click here for more information about Queensland Islands «« The islands that lie on the Great Barrier Reef of Australia's north east coast contain some of the most popular tourist resorts in Australia. Although the Great Barrier Reef is some two thousand kilometers in length, there are a large number of extremly diverse islands that you can visit. Most of these have there own fringing reefs, superb beaches and a uniquely Australian atmosphere. There are two main types of islands that can be found along the length of the Great Barrier Reef. The first is the Coral cay. A Coral cay forms right on top of the reef itself. The island consists of sand and broken coral which, over time, washes to the leeward side of the reef and eventually builds up into an island. Vedgetation begins to grow over time and seabirds begin nesting there. These ecosystems are extremly delicate and great care has to be exercised to maintain their ecological balance. Coral cays make some of the most romantic of holiday destinations with their waving palm trees and white coral sand beaches and surrounding azure reef waters.
The second type of island you will find along the Great Barrier Reef is the continental island. These are mostly the tops of hills and mountains that have become islands as the coastline of Australia has slowly become submerged by the Pacific Ocean. There are hundreds of these continental islands along the length of the reef itself. While there are a large number o both kinds of islands along the length of the reef, there are some that have had wonderful holiday resorts constructed on them. Some of the coral cays that have reef resorts include Green Island, Heron Island, Wilson Island and Lady Elliot Island. Some of the continental islands with resorts include Lizard Island, Dunk Island, Bedarra Island, Orpheus Island and the Whitsunday Islands. Many of these resorts are famous for the quality of the holiday facilities that they offer.
As most of these Islands either have fringing reefs or are coral cays on the reef itself, all have developed a snorkeling and diving program for their guests. In most cases dive instructors and dive masters are there to teach and guide divers around the local reefs and coral formations. These activities add to the charm and enjoyment of the islands that exist along the Queensland, Great barrier reef, coast. |
