The Great Barrier Reef is home to a number of coral cays where you can find a vacation resort to stay at and Lady Elliot Island is one of these. It lies at the very southern end of the reef system and has been famous for having the clearest water and the best diving on the entire reef. It is also home to the most affordable resort on any of Queensland's fantastic islands. Lady Elliot has not gone down the luxury accommodation path of many of its competitors and offers a cheaper alternative with its permanent tent cabins and comfortable but basic cabins. Unlike many of the other island resorts, Lady Elliot Island can only be accessed by air. It has its own airport and flights arrive every day from Hervey Bay and Bundaberg to ferry in passengers and supplies.

The diving on Lady Elliot Island is spectacular. There are around twenty popular dive sites plus there is a marked trail you can swim along that includes the wreck of a yacht as well as the many bommmies and drop offs. Water visibility at this end of the reef is usually better than twenty meters as the island is well away from the coast and mainland river systems that bring pollutants into the offshore waters. The island has qualified dive staff so you can learn to dive here or you can join one of the dive masters on a tour of the best dive spots or to see one of the Manta rays or turtles that are common here. There are also glass bottom boats and you can simply snorkel off the beach at Lady Elliot Island if you don't want to join in the organised activities. The island is carbon neutral and developes all its own power using solar technology.

Lady Elliot Island has a research center where you can see technicians conducting their work It is also important as a seabird nesting site and there are always tens of thousands of birds around the island. Sea turtles of several different species nest here and the staff will escort you to the beach at night to see the turtles laying their eggs of the babies hatching out.
