During cyclone Larry in March 2007, many of the islands facilities were damaged beyond repair and the island was closed and almost totally rebuilt so now provides many new facilities. In March 2011 Cyclone yasi, category five, again lashed the island scoring a direct hit and completly destroyed the newly repaired resort. As of December 2011 the island has been sold and is to be totally rebuilt once again. Dunk Island lies off the far North Queensland coast, just south of Cairns and close to the mainland town of Mission Beach. Dunk Island is one of the most popular island resorts on the Queensland coast and is famous for its national park, its rainforest and the beautiful bushwalks that can be enjoyed. Dunk Island has great beaches and also features an 18 hole golf course which is quite challenging. The island is accessed by air from Cairns.
